Mum slammed for refusing to attend son’s wedding as his brother wasn’t invited

A mum has come under fire online, after confessing she had pulled out of her own son’s wedding because his brother wasn’t invited – despite him having a justifiable reason

Wedding guestlists can be complicated, but, generally speaking, there are a few people you would absolutely expect to receive an invite – and that’s the immediate family of both the bride and the groom.

But, as with everything else in life, nothing is ever that simple, and often family tensions and dramas from the past can have a huge impact on who gets to be there when the happy couple says I do.

This is something which one mum knows all too well, after she’s found herself in an extremely uncomfortable situation surrounding her eldest son’s wedding.

While you’d assume she’d be chomping at the bit to see her son say his vows, the mum-of-two has made the difficult decision not to attend the wedding, based on the fact that her other son isn’t invited.

“I have two sons; 22-year-old Isaiah and Daniel, 24. They had a great childhood together and grew up in a big family with loving grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins on both sides,” the woman explained on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum.

However, the siblings’ relationship started to deteriorate when they were in their late teens, over an incident that happened involving Daniel’s girlfriend, who he’d been in a relationship with for a number of years. Daniel had been planning to propose to his childhood sweetheart, but their relationship came to a bitter end when Isiah stole from the girlfriend’s family and blamed it on Daniel.

As a result of the incident, the two brothers no longer have any contact and neither of them live at home with their parents, although both of them are still in regular contact with their family.

“Daniel is getting married this month, and he sent me, his dad, and everyone else in the family an invitation except for Isaiah. I called Daniel to ask since I assumed he probably didn’t send Isaiah an invitation but expected him to accompany me and my husband,” the mum continued.

“He told me no, he intended to not invite his brother because he doesn’t want him at his wedding. I felt heavy because Isaiah already apologised, sought out forgiveness and gave Daniel time and space to reconcile but Daniel kept ignoring him saying he wanted nothing to do with him.

“I explained how I felt he was being too harsh on his brother and he told me to not pressure him about it and respect his decision.”

In response, the mum told him that if Isiah wasn’t invited to the wedding, she wouldn’t be attending either, causing Daniel to lash out and accuse his mum of trying to bully him into inviting his brother.

“He told me I was selfish for putting Isaiah feelings over his and on his wedding no less. We argued then he hung up after telling me if I don’t attend then he’ll never speak to me again,” the mum added.

“We haven’t talked since then and my husband agrees that Daniel is the one complicating things and not being graceful towards his brother who wants to share his happy day with him.”

But, after turning to Reddit to question whether she was justified in telling Daniel she wouldn’t be attending the wedding, she was met with huge criticism for seemingly favouring one son’s feelings over the other.

“I’m seeing some definite golden child/ scapegoat tendencies here. Your favourite child not only lied to ruin his brother’s life, he stole to make the lie more plausible. At this rate, you’re lucky YOU’VE even ended up being invited,” one Redditor commented.

Meanwhile another added: “Isaiah is not owed and does not deserve Daniel’s forgiveness. Neither do you for continually trying to pretend like what Daniel did was excusable.

“If you don’t go to that wedding, you will never know your grandkids. I dearly hope the family Daniel is marrying into are good people, because you are not.”
